Fun fall images how to make the most of your time
Hi friends,
Fall is one of my favorite seasons for family photos. The warm colors, golden light, cozy outfits, and changing scenery make the perfect backdrop for beautiful images. But when you’re working with little ones (and sometimes husbands who aren’t quite as excited about pictures 😂), making the most of your session time is important!
Here are a few simple ways to get beautiful, fun fall images without making your session feel stressful.
1. Don’t Worry About Everyone Looking at the Camera
Some of my favorite images happen when no one is looking at me.
Snuggle your babies. Walk together. Look at your spouse. Make your kids laugh. Toss your little one in the air. Let the kids explore for a minute.
Of course, we’ll get that classic photo of everyone smiling at the camera, but the candid moments are often the ones that end up meaning the most.
2. Choose Outfits That Coordinate, Not Match
You don’t need everyone wearing the exact same color. Instead, choose a few colors that complement each other.
For fall, I love warm neutrals and earthy tones like cream, camel, chocolate brown, rust, muted green, denim, burgundy, and soft beige.
Adding different textures through sweaters, dresses, boots, jackets, or accessories can also make your photos feel more elevated and interesting.
3. Let the Kids Be Kids
Your child does not have to stand perfectly still and smile for every photo!
In fact, please don’t stress if they don’t.
Some of the best images come from letting children move and have fun. We can play games, run, dance, cuddle, tell silly jokes, or have them race toward the camera.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s capturing your family as you are right now.
4. Come Ready to Have Fun
Think of your fall session as family time with photos happening along the way.
Instead of repeatedly telling the kids to “smile” or “look at the camera,” interact with them. Tickle them. Whisper something funny. Give them a huge hug. Pick them up.
Real interaction creates real expressions — and those are the images I want to capture for you.
5. Arrive Ready to Go
Fall sessions are often scheduled around that gorgeous golden light right before sunset, so timing matters.
Try to have everyone dressed, fed, and ready before arriving. Give yourself a little extra travel time so you aren’t rushing into your session feeling stressed.
For younger children, bringing a few non-messy snacks and water can also be a lifesaver.
6. Trust the Process
Your session may feel a little chaotic in the moment — especially with multiple children — and that is completely normal.
You might feel like your kids weren’t listening or wonder if we got anything good. Meanwhile, I’m capturing tiny smiles, cuddles, movement, laughter, and all those little in-between moments you may not even notice.
So relax, love on your family, and let me take care of the rest.
Fall Goes by Fast 🍂
The leaves change, the kids grow, and another year somehow passes faster than the last.
Fall photos aren’t just about getting the perfect picture for your Christmas card. They’re about documenting this season of your family — exactly as it is right now.
So come ready to laugh, cuddle, play, and have a little fun.
I’ll handle the photos. 🤎
